The origin of spells – where did spells come from?

In the field of esotericism and popular culture at large, terms such as , “spell”, “casting spells/enchantments” will appear very often. But do we really know and understand the meaning of similar words?

Witchcraft – the practice of magical abilities

Spells and sorcery are synonymous terms, we most often use them to describe the possession and practice of certain unique abilities to make magical transformations, summon spirits, sometimes to discover all beings and forms of energy existing on Earth. It is worth being aware that witchcraft is a term very rich in meaning, sometimes understood differently in different corners of the world, depending on cultural codes, social norms in a given territory. In the past, sorcery and had pejorative overtones, the words aroused fear, for example, among the indigenous inhabitants of ancient Africa – because it was believed that sorcery was the use of metaphysical means to harm someone, to take revenge. Throughout history, especially in early modern times, witchcraft was often associated with devil worship, leading to absurd witch hunts and their trials in Protestant Europe. Modern understanding of the terms , “witchcraft”, is still very complex, difficult to define clearly, but focuses primarily on positive or neutral aspects of pagan practices, which include, for example, divination, incantations, interests in the unexplored, invisible, extrasensory.

Incantation – what it is and means for the common man

As in the case of , “witchcraft”, the meaning of the term , “spell” is very complex and it is difficult to give any universal definition of the word. However, if we are at least a little interested in esoteric subjects, in the literature we will come across indications that the creation of spells is a kind of art of identifying, raising and directing one’s energy for specific purposes. , “Spell” to put it a bit more simply is simply a magical intention, most often combined with a specific action. If you are wondering when spells are most effective, you should be aware that it is when they are a response to someone’s burning desire or need, or are something like a reaction to a specific event. To effectively create spells and use them, you don’t need to be a follower of any particular religion or have some special tools – what really matters is having some theoretical knowledge, experience in directing your magical energy into spells with the right focus, wisdom, empathy with your surroundings.

Magic spells – ordering and believing in their effectiveness

Ordering spells for a specific purpose is an activity that has its origins in ancient, including Slavic folklore. For the ancestors, spells played a very big role, they were supposed to protect against diseases, evoke true love, ensure a bountiful harvest and be a cure for infertility. Ordering spells was once associated with a great belief in the causal power of words combined with gestures, sometimes also with additional magical rituals. Spells are an extremely interesting subject, combining extrasensory, parapsychological elements, they arise from our human need to create the reality in which we live. What about the purpose of spells – do they bring benefit or harm? In folklore, there was a conviction that spells should rather promote good and not evil, hence the most popular were those for good weather, love, health, broadly defined fertility. Of course, literary accounts have also been preserved, according to which one could also order a spell causing great harm to someone. Such spells began, for example, with the words: , “I take the benefit” and were supposed to be cast by evil witches, who were asked by someone to take milk from the cows of their hated neighbors.
