10 sacred herbs that can cleanse your home of negative energy
If you’re feeling uninspired, lethargic or otherwise “absent-minded,” a space cleansing ritual may be just what you need to remove unwanted energy from the air around you.
Although fumigating with sage is a popular and effective way to cleanse a space, in this article you will also read about other wonderful herbs and incense that will help effectively cleanse the space you are in. To cleanse a room simply burn the herb until smoke appears, then walk around the room with it, keeping in mind exactly what you want it to cleanse. Remember to open the windows before you start, and never leave anything burning unattended!
Burn the cedar for purification.
Burning cedar (click on the blue highlighted links to go to our store where you can find the herb) is a great way to purify the air when you’re in the process of releasing low vibrations. For example, when you’re finally ridding your closet of outdated or no longer presentable clothes, burning cedar is a symbolic way to clear the space of lingering energy. Similarly, if you’re buying antiques or vintage items, you can smoke cedar to cleanse them of the previous owner’s energy.
Burn Yerba Santa to feel the love.
Yerba Santa is traditionally roasted to help heal broken hearts or to give encouragement. This herb is also great to include in a home caulking ritual if you are just beginning to practice love and self-care.
Burn rosemary for a fresh start.
Rosemary is often burned to provide a “new start” in life. Whether it’s breaking an addiction, embarking on a new path, or opening up to greater creativity, strong and fragrant rosemary can help open the door to a new one.
Burn mugwort for sleepy nights.
Mugwort sounds a bit like something you might have read about in a fantasy novel, and its effects are just as fantastic! Burning mugwort in the bedroom is believed to enhance dreams, especially conscious, adventurous ones.
Burn juniper for comfort.
Burn juniper if you want to feel more comfortable in your home. As its smoke flows through the space, it introduces a calm energy where you will feel safe and comfortable.
Burn resins for purification.
Resins, such as frankincense and myrrh, have been burned in purification rituals over the centuries. The resins themselves will not ignite easily, so you will need a charcoal on a coaster to burn them. To burn the resins, light the edge of the charcoal with a long match or lighter and place it on a non-flammable surface, such as sand. Give it a minute to heat up, then sprinkle a small amount of resin on top.
Frankincense smoke is believed to carry prayers to heaven in its smoke. It is also used to quiet the rushing mind, making it easier to meditate. Myrrh is used to calm the mind and align the body’s energy centers, so it is also popular to burn before meditations.
Burn Palo Santo for prosperity.
Palo Santo is a sacred wood that comes from the native Palo Santo tree on the South American coast. Shamans traditionally used it to remove negative energy and increase love and prosperity. It burns quite slowly, and its woody rich aroma is very pleasant and inviting.
Burn Tibetan frankincense for purity.
Tibetan frankincense, extracted from 38 Himalayan herbs, is believed to deeply purify a space when burned. It creates a more peaceful, pure and meditative sanctuary.
Burn sandalwood for grounding.
Simple sandalwood cones smell pleasant when burned and fill the air with plenty of grounding and centralizing aromatherapy.
If you don’t want to burn anything… use Himalayan salt lamps.
While you don’t technically “burn” these lamps, you can use them to release negative ions into the air and create a sense of calm and well-being. They are ideal for offices and homes where you can’t burn herbs, and look beautiful when lit.
Remember, anything you do to clear a space, even a simple opening of a window, will bring more flow and positive energy into your home and your life!
